The older a roof gets, the more likely it is to need to get replaced. Roofs don’t last forever, and the material is usually worn from all the weather damage around 20 years. If you have a roof that lasts longer than that, you’re probably doing pretty well for yourself. But two designers were able to use an old roof from a barn that was destroyed in an earthquake and create a forest oasis that you’ve only dreamt about.
All about the new forest house
When an earthquake completely destroyed the walls of an old barn, and the owner didn’t feel the need to rebuild the structure, two designers saw an opportunity to create an amazing home. There are some parts of the barn that were sold to other designers, but the bulk of the damaged barn went to the two designers that created the forest house. According to De Zeen Magazine, the two designers took the old roof and put up new supports to ensure it would be secure. Because the roof wasn’t held up with any support beams in the middle of it, they were able to create a completely open floor plan space. The building is located in the middle of the forest, so they were able to use insulated glass instead of using traditional sheetrock. From a distance, you can see straight through the entire home, with the exception of the bathroom and bedrooms which were given a solid wall for privacy. The designers didn’t want to lose any of the wood that they were given, so used other parts of the barn to create design features in the room as well. It is a very rustic and modern space that anyone who loves the woods would only dream about. You feel as though you are in the thick of it, yet you are still protected from the wild.
Can you use an old roof?
In most cases, you’ll need to get a new roof. Unless you can find a gem such as the barn roof, and even in that case, it takes a lot to restore the roof to usable condition. The designers on the forest house project had to spend a lot of time and money to ensure the roof would be stable and protective. In your case, it is better to stick with a new roof or roof repair on targeted areas. The average roof only lasts about 20 years, so if you are past your 20 year mark and are starting to notice any problems, it is never too soon to call a roof expert and have them come take a look at the situation. They will be able to give you a better recommendation for your situation.
